about

The title is a type of wordplay on Sherriff’s “Yakiya”. Whilst Sherriff’s composition was inspired by Robin Eubank's "Matatape”, my composition takes inspiration from Karim Ziad's "Houaria". The structure of Ziad’s work was studied and adapted to make way for the Afro-Cuban and Indian elements that contributed to the grooves, rhythmic phrases and modes of my piece. The number of characters in the title is also symbolic, as 6 plays a significant role in the metre, rhythm, pitches and phrases of my composition.
